Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Gets the Google Mapstm Street View Treatment

Tampa, Fla. (January 20, 2010) – Exploring the Serengeti Plain or checking out the world’s best roller coasters from the comfort of your home computer just became a reality. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and its waterpark, Adventure Island, are now featured in Street View on Google Maps.

Virtual visits are now available to all 10 SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment locations, including the SeaWorld parks in Orlando, San Antonio and San Diego; Discovery Cove, a swim-with-dolphins resort, and Aquatica, SeaWorld’s waterpark, both in Orlando;Busch Gardens and Water Country USA, both in Williamsburg; and Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA.

In Tampa, nearly every inch of Busch Gardens was mapped using one of Google’s “Trikes.” A state-of-the-art camera automatically gathered photographs from the back of a modified bicycle. Google software then blended the images, creating the famous, interactive and completely moveable 360-degree scenes Street View is known for.

And the best way to make sure every show, splash, adventure and world-class thrill ride was mapped? The 250-pound Trike, complete with camera and GPS mounted on a mast, was pedal-powered by a Google staff member. Consider it the ultimate mix of technology, both high and low.

“We’re thrilled to be among the first theme parks in the world to get the Google Street View treatment,” said Joe Couceiro, chief marketing officer for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. “Now, no matter where you are, you can enjoy an online experience of our parks including seeing their scope and diversity while planning your vacation. The only thing missing is feeding a giraffe or taking on the best roller coasters in the world.”

Google Maps began including Street View images in 2007. More than a dozen countries and over one hundred cities now can be seen online.

“I began thinking about building a bicycle-based Street View system after realizing how many great places around the world aren’t accessible by car, but still would be perfect to include in Street View on Google Maps. The immensely popular SeaWorld parks are perfect examples of fun and interesting locations that our Trike can add to Google Maps, benefiting families and tourists around the world,” said Dan Ratner, Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Street View team & creator of the Trike.

Street View visits to the parks are accessible via Web and mobile applications. Viewers can start by going to maps.google.comand searching for Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Then drag the orange “Pegman” icon (found at the top left of the map) for a “walking tour.” Among the highlights – also seen in “satellite mode” – Busch Gardens visitors can look for America’s first dive coaster, SheiKra.

Orlando, Fla. (December 1, 2009) – With the sale of Busch Entertainment Corp. to Blackstone Capital Partners V L.P., an investor fund advised by The Blackstone Group, comes a new name for the company that operates some of the nation’s best known and popular theme parks.

“SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment” replaces “Busch Entertainment Corporation” with the closing of the sale announced jointly today by Anheuser-Busch InBev and The Blackstone Group.

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment operates 10 parks across the U.S.: SeaWorlds in Orlando, San Diego and San Antonio; Busch Gardens parks in Tampa, Fla. and Williamsburg, Va.; Discovery Cove and Aquatica in Orlando; Sesame Place near Philadelphia, Pa.; and water parks Adventure Island in Tampa and Water Country USA in Williamsburg.

The new name reflects the prominence of the SeaWorld brand in both the family travel industry and among the company’s portfolio of parks.

“It is one of the world’s most widely recognized and respected family travel brands,” said Jim Atchison, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment President. “SeaWorld has been a brand associated with quality family entertainment since SeaWorld San Diego opened its gates for the first time in March 1964.”

Despite the new name, little else about the company changes with today’s acquisition by Blackstone, Atchison said. The leadership team, park portfolio, operating philosophy, commitment to quality and workforce is unchanged: “While this is the start of an exciting new phase in our evolution, we remain dedicated to the same values and principles that have been the foundation of our success for five decades.”

This is an extension of an earlier article I posted about the removal of the Clydesdales from the Busch parks.

It’s not uncommon for theme parks to remove existing attractions and replace them with something new, name any park and you’ll be able to find an example. Here at Busch Gardens Williamsburg we had that happen fairly recently with the removal of Le Mans Raceway to build Griffon and it’s likely to be happening again with the removal of the classic suspended coaster, The Big Bad Wolf. However, this article is not about the rumored replacement project for the Big Bad Wolf/Festhaus Park area of the park, rather, it is about a project that may be even further down the line for the park.

With the sale of all ten Busch Entertainment parks it’s been made clear by management that there would not be any significant changes in day to day operations. One thing that was confirmed is that the famous Busch Clydesdales will no longer be housed in the parks. If you’ve visited Busch Gardens here in Williamsburg you likely walked by the stables in the Heatherdowns section. Many people probably don’t stop to think about where the horses actually live. The stables that are viewable to the guests are too small to comfortably accommodate the horses. That job falls to a large group of stables and grazing area viewable only via the train ride around the park. Obviously the fact that the horses will no longer be in the park means the stables and grazing areas are no longer needed and it leaves a huge area of empty, pre-cleared land.

Here’s an overhead image to give you a better idea of how much land will be left empty:

The blue circle is the area currently rumored to be undergoing a transformation to a new country. The red circle is where the stables are currently located. You can see the area left by the removal of the stables is just about the same size as the Big Bad Wolf/Festhaus Park area.

One of the reasons cited for the failure of Drachen Fire was the fact that the entrance was out of the way and not easy to find and while this is not a legitimate reason for the famous coaster’s demise (plenty of people can find Festhaus Park during Howl-O-Scream), it would not be possible to build a new country if it utilized only that entrance. While the rumored new country would have expanded entrances even if the stables were still in existence, a third crossing of the Rhine River would increase accessibility even more. However, for there to be a third crossing, there would have to be something on the other side of the river to connect to.

There was some concern among the community of Busch-goers here in Williamsburg that the removal of Festhaus Park would lead to a decline in quantity of attractions for Howl-O-Scream and that the summer concerts in the park would go the way of the Dodo bird. It would seem, however, that with a newly empty plot of land that is already fairly cleared it would be simple enough for Busch to convert it into an area capable of hosting concerts and multiple Howl-O-Scream attractions until more permanent plans are made.

Using the newly emptied plot would be beneficial for Festa Italia as well. Festa has felt stagnant for the past few years. It is essentially a dead end that survives only because it houses two anchor attractions in Apollo’s Chariot and the Roman Rapids. Adding a “Festa Park” (to resemble “Festhaus Park”) would lead to an increase in traffic in the section and perhaps encourage the park to make some renovations to it. Adding a legitimate new country would mean Festa would no longer be a dead end and would become part of the outer circle of the park given that a third river crossing is built.

Here’s a video of the stables as seen from the train:

These things take time to work out and Busch is not the type of company to rush into any attraction or addition without making sure it’s the highest quality possible. Obviously more information will come down the pipeline as time goes by, but I expect that within the next two to four years, we will know what the initial plans for the land are. What do you think?
